Ed Sheeran es un gran cantautor y prueba de ellos es que en su nuevo disco «Divide» se compone de canciones que prácticamente son todas Hit, o lo van a ser pronto.
El 4 de enero, Sheeran subió un adelanto de 6 segundos de un fondo azul a las redes sociales, con la frase «el club no es el mejor lugar para encontrar un amante», que es la primera línea de «Shape of You». Sheeran reveló en el BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show el 6 de enero que «Shape of You» se escribió originalmente pensando en Rihanna, sin embargo decidió guardar la canción para sí mismo pensando que algunas de las letras no encajaban con la cantante barbadense.
Composición
Shape of You es una canción influenciada en dancehall con R&B minimalista experto. En la canción Sheeran canta sobre un influjo de percusión Marimba-alimentado sobre un romance que brota. «El club no es el mejor lugar para encontrar un amante, por lo que el bar es donde voy / mis amigos y yo en la mesa tomando chupitos, bebemos rápido y luego hablamos lento», canta. «Ven y comienza una conversación solo conmigo / Y confía en mí, te daré una oportunidad».
Recepción de la crítica
Shape of You recibió críticas positivas de los críticos musicales. Jon Caramanica, de The New York Times, dijo que «Shape of You» es más complicado, una canción ágil y efectiva que toma el adelgazamiento agresivo de la «música caribeña». Taylor Weatherby, de Billboard, escribió sobre la canción: «Shape of You no suena bastante como su típica melodía Sheeran, pero eso casi sirve como una indicación de lo que el cantante de «Thinking Out Loud» ha estado haciendo durante su hiato: crear música que todavía se siente como Sheeran, sólo con un nuevo giro.» Jeremy Gordon de SPIN dio a la canción una revisión positiva, afirmando que la canción «es un intento plausible de convencernos de que ha tenido sexo … mucho. Tipo de bofetadas, aunque realmente no se puede imaginar a Sheeran nunca diciendo «poner ese cuerpo en mí» a una mujer humana real.»
